I've signed up for this.  Penn would like a bunch of us to do it so we can report on the experience.  If you're up for it, give it a shot.

I just signed up. They sent the first survey within minutes.

The issue so far is that it keeps interrupting me while I'm having fun.  I was happier before the survey.

So far I've done four of these surveys and twice at really intense moments of my day. One of those moments was while I was having a really hilarious exchange with a customer and the other was while having an argument with someone I work with about something we have a deep disagreement about.

What was interesting about it didn't have a lot to do with the survey questions, but being interrupted during those moments and having to evaluate my emotions and answer questions took me out of that emotional place and actually gave me some good perspective in the case of the argument. Totally unintended result and beside the point of the surveys, but still had an effect on my day.

Plus the whole thing sort of appeals to my narcissistic side. I wonder if I can just sign up for some program or app that will ask probing questions about my emotional state on an ongoing basis, not just for the 50 surveys this study does. I may think about marketing one- keep your eyes peeled for an app called "Attention Whore."

I have done about eight surveys now. It's not much of a commitment, and they take one or two minutes. Some of us are more "interruptible" than others but I'd encourage people to do this.

I signed up as well. the happy quizzes seem to pop into my inbox at strange times.

that said...interesting so far

Interesting. I'll definitely give it a shot.

I just completed this and got my results- happy to share them or discuss with anyone who is interested. A few quick comments.

1. 50 surveys, 3 per day- I was happy when it was completed. It got tiring. That said, I never got to the point where I was anticipating them.

2. The data is really, really hard to interpret. I'm not sure if I'm learning something new about myself or if I mistrust the process that caught only certain moments, or a particular activity or situation only once.

this looks interesting. i think you kind of have to work at happiness these days. it takes effort.. tuning out certain things tuning into other things. but my main objective is to be happy in the present and not dwell on just the good times in the past. cuz there were LOTS of good times in the past. but as I get older.. it takes a little more effort to be happy..

Signed up & finished first survey. As long as they stay shorthand sweet, I can see no problem completing all 50. I signed up for a health/fitness/lifestyle survey a couple of years ago and even though the surveys didn't happen but every couple of months, the surveys took FOREVER and were depressing focusing on how I was not exercising and eating healthier than the last survey. I simply stopped responding.

This survey is a lot like what my psychologist once gave me to work on but in paper format. The idea of "Mindfulness" is what is driving this type of cognitive process. The more conscience that you are of what upsets you and makes you happy then you won't end up with that feeling of "I don't know why I am feeling this way.". Plus we have a natural tendency to remember negative experiences more than positive. Ever have a generally great day and something negative happens on the way home from work and when someone asks how your day was, your first response is "awful"? I know my kids do this all the time.

I am looking forward to how the survey will impact my daily mindfulness without having to remember to write down stuff during the day or when I get home and trying to recounted what happened and how I felt.

Happy surveying!

On day 4 of this.  The questions are interesting, but sometimes personally challenging to answer without over thinking them.  For example: "Do you have to be doing this activity?"  Well....do we really HAVE to be doing anything? That being said, interested to see the results after 50 responses.

I signed up - sounds interesting!

I signed up.  Just did the first one, but have no idea about how the charts they display are supposed to be interpreted and how it relates to "happiness."

I'm Fat

Posted by Captain Snarky on May 24, 2013 at 10:00pm 0 Comments

OK, so I watched some more P&T episodes and found one about how the so-called, "obesity epidemic" is bullshit.  Of course, the obesity epidemic is bullshit.  Pretty much everything one sees in the media is a load of dog shit.  Nothing new there.  I can't really deny however that something's going on out there.  I mean, after all, there are tons of super-fat motherfuckers walking around and scooting around on those little electric carts everywhere one looks.

Nonetheless, I had…

Dolphins Are Funny Things

Posted by Captain Snarky on May 24, 2013 at 9:22pm 0 Comments

I just finished watching P&T's "Bullshit" episode on dolphins.  It inspired me to share my personal experience with them, which I had back in the Amazon River Basin in 1996.

No, I didn't travel to the Amazon in 1996 to swim with the world's only freshwater pink and gray dolphins who inhabit the waters there, but to... well... to... ummmm... uh... OK!  So, I don't even know what the fuck I went to the Amazon for in the first place!  It's just that I've always loved adventures (and…
